Twitter Spaces: What It Is and Why Marketers Should Care

What is Twitter Spaces?

Twitter Spaces - live audio conversations - was introduced in 2020 to some users and is now available to all. Twitter describes Spaces as a "place to come together, built around the voices of the people using Twitter, your Twitter community".

Twitter’s Spaces will allow a user to gather with another person or a group of users for live conversations. You'll see them appear while they're happening. Once they've ended, they will no longer be available publicly on Twitter.

Why marketers should care about Twitter Spaces

Twitter has over 200 million daily active users, so that alone makes it an attractive tool for marketers and brands. With so many newly emerging apps - like Clubhouse - it can be time-consuming to learn how to navigate the tool, study its user base, and learn trends and best practices. Marketers who are experienced Twitter users might turn to Spaces over other social apps like Clubhouse simply because they already have a strong, engaged following on Twitter and only need to learn how to use one additional feature, rather than an entirely new platform. If you’re ready to dive in, keep reading to discover how to create and join a Space.

Here’s How to Create a Space on Twitter

You can start a Space in two ways:

  1. Long press on compose and then tap the new Spaces icon on the left.

  2. Tap on your profile image in Fleets, scroll to the right, and tap Spaces.

You can invite people to speak, share thoughts, send emojis, and more. Be sure to select who can join with speaking privileges. As the creator of the Space you are the only person who has full control of starting and ending the Space chat. Your mic will be off to start. When ready, tap Start your Space. You can also choose whether or not you want to share transcriptions by toggling the button on or off.

  3. Now you can start recording in your Space!

How to Join a Space

Find the Space (the microphone icon) in the bottom menu of your Twitter homepage, select it, and then tap the Join this Space button that pops up. Your mic will be off to start. My favourite tip? You can explore Spaces and set reminders for upcoming, scheduled ones. A great way to stay on top of trends and conversations relevant to your areas of interest.

If you're joining a Space as a speaker, in addition to talking, you can pin tweets to the Space, turn on captions so everyone can follow along with what you’re saying, and tweet the Space so your followers can join.
