Hi, It’s nice to meet you!
Hi! Thanks for stopping by.
Let me set the stage: I’m writing this post from a cottage porch overlooking the beach. It’s a cool, overcast summer afternoon. I’ve taken the week off of work to spend time with my family. My 'alone’ time is almost always writing or blogging. I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting as the week has passed about how quickly things change - in our personal lives and in our careers. The blog post that I am writing today is the first on this beccagrieb.com site, but it is actually my 572nd blog post. I started blogging on Wordpress back in 2003, seven years later I had my own website, and 9 years after that my website crashed along with my 561 blog posts. More on that later.
So, who am I anyways?
I started working in the marketing communications field in 2008 - I was in university and started to tackle part-time work mostly in advertising and public relations. By 2011 I was working at Opentext, one of the largest software companies in Canada, as a PR and Social Media Specialist. I had the opportunity to develop the first-ever digital strategy for the company and that was a pivotal moment in my career where I started my digital marketing journey. I was recognized as a Top 30 under 30 in Canada because of my work, and decided from this point on to focus my career in the digital space.
It’s amazing how quickly things can change.
By 2015 I was working in the food and beverage industry in all things digital - search optimization, social, content, email, and ppc. It’s amazing that in ten years the world of digital marketing has gone from figuring out how to establish a brand on social to leveraging a robust advertising, content and influencer strategy to drive significant business results. In 2018 I had the pleasure of starting the next stage in my career with DOZR, which at the time was a fast-growing startup and today is recognized as the leader in e-commerce and tech solutions for the construction industry.
“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it.” - Steve Jobs
Teaching, Learning, Growing.
I spent five years teaching digital marketing at Conestoga College. They contacted me originally to teach a 2-day seminar, and later contacted me again asking if I would want to design and implement a course for graduate students. I designed a full-scope digital marketing course covering performance marketing, email, content, paid and earned social media, and analytics. They called the course Digital Tools & Analytics. The course is still taught today across three programs at the College.
I will be launching a marketing seminar and workshop offering later this year in an ongoing cadence because I am passionate about helping businesses not only succeed but learn the tools and techniques they need to know to keep moving and growing. The workshops will be a combination of my learned experiences in the field, and my course outlines from my teaching days. One part seminar and one part active application of learned tools and strategy.
In 2016 I applied to the University of Alberta’s MACT program and was accepted. I’m passionate about and highly capable of achieving the optimal balance of creative and analytical approaches required to succeed in today's digital marketplace. Something tells me my journey in academia isn’t over, but only time will tell ;)
For now I keep my growth mindset fuelled with this blog, helping businesses to achieve their marketing goals, collaborating with brands I love, and reading. Bookworms, if you have a recommendation send it my way please!
So, what now?
This blog has grown and evolved so much since 2003. You can expect many blog posts sharing tips, techniques and best practices for growing and developing a marketing strategy in today’s constantly evolving digital world. You can also find a few blogs featuring my lived and shared experiences - I am human, after all. I’m so glad that you are here - thanks for joining me in this adventure and please don’t hesitate to contact me with questions or comments.
